TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

Why is my laptop keyboard not working?

When a laptop keyboard stops responding, the problem can be software, a keyboard ribbon connection, physical key damage, liquid exposure or the keyboard assembly itself. Whether all keys or only certain keys fail is an important clue.

What the symptom can mean

Possibility 1A driver or accessibility setting can change keyboard behaviour in Windows.
Possibility 2A loose internal ribbon cable can disable the built-in keyboard.
Possibility 3Liquid can damage the keyboard matrix and sometimes the motherboard below it.
Possibility 4Individual scissor mechanisms can break even when the electronics are fine.
Possibility 5Some models require replacement of the full palmrest/top-case assembly.

When to stop DIY troubleshooting

After a liquid spill, continued power can worsen corrosion or short circuits. Power the laptop off and avoid heat guns, hair dryers or rice.

When professional diagnosis makes sense

If the simple checks do not identify the cause, diagnosis can prevent unnecessary parts replacement. Laptop Clinic serves NDG and Greater Montréal. Describe the symptom and what happened before it started; you do not need to know the technical name of the fault.

Useful details before a diagnosis

Note the exact computer model, when the problem started, and any recent change such as an update, drop, liquid spill, new part or new charger. If the problem is intermittent, a short video or photo of the error can help. For storage-related problems, always mention whether the files are important before any reinstall, reset, initialization or formatting attempt.
